Despite alcohol violation, City Council expected to renew Thumbs’ liquor license

The liquor license for the Ames bar Thumbs will likely be renewed — despite being cited for serving alcohol after hours — at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

Thumbs, 2816 West St., was cited May 13 for serving beverages after hours — the business’s only liquor violation.

“During the past year [Thumbs] had one violation and that was being handled by the Iowa Liquor Commission,” said Ames Mayor Ted Tedesco.

Thumbs manager Matt Lester, said the violation was not a normal circumstance for Thumbs.

“There’s not much you can do about it — [the violation] was right after 2 a.m.,” Lester said.

The council will vote to approve renewal of liquor licenses for eight other businesses and will consider applications for two new licenses at 212 Main Pub & Grill, 212 Main St. and Aldi, Inc., 1301 Buckeye Ave.

The City Council will also consider a request from the support group for the new recreation and aquatics complex to set Dec. 9 as the date of a special bond election for funding for the facility.

Tedesco said he doubts the bond election would be combined with a possible Dec. 2 run-off election.

The run-off election will only occur if no one wins more than 50 percent of the vote in the Nov. 4 elections for the at-large, second ward and fourth ward seats of the City Council.

“I think they want to have their own special election and not become involved in candidate issues,” he said.

Councilwoman Sharon Wirth said she supports the election being separate from council elections.

“I think it’s important for people to focus on the issue on its own merits,” Wirth said.

The council will also vote on a motion to suspend parking enforcement in the Main Street business area on Saturdays and from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday to allow people to look at holiday lighting. The suspension would last from Nov. 22 to Dec. 27.

The council meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at Ames City Hall, 515 Clark Ave.
