LETTER: Student SEVIS fee a financial burden
October 30, 2003
I read Eric Rowley’s Oct. 28 article, “ISU ahead of game — no SEVIS fees for international students,” which talked about possibly requiring international students to pay a fee for the SEVIS program because of budget cuts, and I was taken aback.
To be honest, I understand why Iowa State would have to charge international students, but I’m wondering if they know what will be the consequences.
Being an international student myself, I have to pay out-of-state tuition, which is increasing every year.
Now I have to pay more money for just trying to get an education which will hopefully get me a job.
Because of the increase in tuition, international students are looking for universities that charge less — if they don’t find one, they’ll go back to their home countries with most of their dreams destroyed.
I don’t have a recommendation for how to solve this problem, but I know for sure there’s always an answer for everything, or in this case a solution for everything.
