Cyclone soccer loses twice
September 28, 2003
Iowa State lost its first two Big 12 soccer matches over the weekend, both on the road, falling 5-1 Friday to Nebraska and losing 2-0 to Colorado on Sunday.
Friday wasn’t the homecoming that ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher envisioned.
Hornbacher, a former Nebraska player, returned to Lincoln, Neb. for the first time as a head coach, only to watch her team surrender three first-half goals to defending Big 12 tournament champion Nebraska in a 5-1 rout over Iowa State at the Abbott Sports Complex.
Iowa State gave up a quick goal four minutes into the contest as Vern Fitzgerald tallied her first of two goals on the night.
Ashley Carter and Lindsey Ingram added goals for Nebraska, which had a 15-4 advantage on total shots in the first half.
Big 12 Newcomer of the Week and redshirt freshman midfielder Kate Kirwan scored the lone Cyclone goal, unassisted in the 47th minute. It was her third goal in three games.
Fitzgerald and Carter converted on goals in the second half for the Cornhuskers, who improved to 6-2-1 overall and 1-0 in the Big 12.
Sunday, freshman forward Katie Griffin scored two goals to lift Colorado to a 2-0 win over the Cyclones.
The Cyclones dropped to 3-4-1 overall and 0-2 in the conference. Colorado is 8-1 and 2-0.
Griffin’s first goal came at the eighth minute of the first half and her second one came at the 86th minute mark. Both goals were assisted by Kathryn Grandinetti.
Senior goalkeeper Beth Chapman had seven saves on the day as Colorado outshot Iowa State 18-5.
