Depth is key to ISU men’s golf tournament win

The ISU men’s golf team won the Fairway Club Invitational Tuesday after the final 18 holes were rained out at Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Neb.
Solid scores in the tournament’s first two rounds, played on Monday in windy conditions, were enough to give the Cyclones their first tournament victory of the season.
Sophomore Drew Dalziel led the Cyclones, scoring even-par 71s in both rounds to finish in a three-way tie for third place, just one shot off the lead.
In his collegiate debut, Curtis Foster led the tournament after 1-under-par 70 in the first round, but he shot a 3-over-par 74 in the second round to place eighth. Senior Clark Smith shot rounds of 73 and 75 to finish in 13th place.
Depth was the key to the win for the Cyclones, who ended with three players in the top 20.
“In the past, if the top two guys struggled, then the team struggled,” head coach Jay Horton said.
Smith said the team victory meant the tournament was success.
“Knowing I’m playing with four guys who can win the tournament really takes the pressure off,” Smith said.
The team’s relaxed attitude helped Foster, a redshirt freshman transfer from New Mexico, who played his first rounds as a Cyclone Monday.
“Curtis had to be nervous coming into this tournament, but he played really incredibly,” Smith said.
The Cyclones win came without sophomore standout Tyler Swanson, who is playing in the John Deere Classic — a PGA Tour event — in Silvis, Ill. this week.
“Swanson is a key player, but Clark adds depth and experience,” Dalziel said.
“We don’t have to count on one player so much.”
Overall, Iowa State shot 581 for the two-round tournament — six shots ahead of second-place finishers Illinois State and Akron.
Iowa State’s next meet, the Kansas Invitational in Lawrence, Kan., is scheduled for Sept. 22-23.
