LETTER: Animal science has made advancement
September 10, 2003
In response to Ruth Neil’s Sept. 9 article, “Organization aims to stop teaching of animal agriculture at universities,” I found Mr. Cantor’s wonderful idea of putting an end to the animal science department at Iowa State and other land grant universities to be ridiculous — especially targeting a school in the heart of agriculture and especially pork producers.
Iowa is one of the top pork-producing states in America; do you really think it’s going to come to an end? I don’t think so, Mr. Cantor! If you take away the animal science program, do you really think it’s going to benefit the animals? I just imagine what it would be like right now if we hadn’t done anything with animals since 1892. It would be chaos!
Also, do you think many of the things you use on a daily basis would be here if we hadn’t advanced in animal sciences over the last 111 years? Would you feel as safe eating meat? Would there be any meat? How many pairs of leather shoes do you own, Mr. Cantor?
You have obviously walked into the wrong part of the country to start your shenanigans. Why don’t you actually make some “responsible” policies that would help animals? Until then, don’t come knocking on our door and expect us to welcome you with open arms.
