Men’s golf to play at invitational

The ISU men’s golf team returns to the fairways Monday in Lawrence, Kan., to compete in the Kansas Invitational at the Alvamar Golf Club.

Thirty-six holes of the 54-hole tournament will be played Monday, with the final 18 on Tuesday.

The undefeated Cyclones, who placed first at the Fairway Club Invitational two weeks ago, look to build on that success in the 15-team tournament with the return of sophomore Tyler Swanson.

Swanson was the only amateur to finish last week’s PGA Tour event, the John Deere Classic, carding a 7-over-par 291.

Head coach Jay Horton said he is happy to see one of his top golfers return, but is quick to point out that it takes a good team to have a good tournament.

“We’re always glad to have solid talent back in the lineup,” Horton said. “But we were capable of winning last time without him.”

The Cyclones will also rely on fellow sophomore Drew Dalziel to post another solid score after he tied for third at the Fairway Club Invitational.

Also starting are seniors Clark Smith and Jeremy Lyons and sophomore Curtis Foster, who made his ISU debut just two weeks ago. Junior Corey Schultz will play as an individual.

The Cyclones will face several tough teams in the tournament, including Wichita State and rival Kansas.

“We’re looking to beat Kansas next,” Dalziel said after finishing the Fairway Club Invitational.

“We have a good field of teams coming to this year’s tournament,” Kansas head coach Ross Randall said. “Houston and Louisville are both strong teams that will be new to the Kansas Invitational, and there are also a few local Big 12 teams participating.”

The Cyclones, who finished fourth at last year’s Kansas Invitational, are just focusing on playing solid, consistent golf, Horton said.

“We have a nice deep lineup,” he said. “That should help us have another good tournament.”
