Inter-Residence Hall Association discusses entertainment, hockey support

The Inter-Residence Hall Association learned of ways to get more residence hall students involved in campus activities at its meeting Thursday night.
Mimi Benjamin, coordinator for academic affairs, said she wants to get more students from the residence halls involved with the residence academic advisory board. The board generates ideas for and deals with issues in the residence halls, Benjamin said.
Students on the board usually are asked questions regarding the environment of the residence halls, she said.
“[The residence academic advisory board] is not a policy-making board or a programming board,” Benjamin said. “We meet and ask questions.”
An ISU hockey team representative also spoke at the IRHA meeting.
Meghan Teigen, senior in marketing and intern for the marketing department for the ISU hockey team, said the marketing department wants to get students from the residence halls together to go to hockey games.
“We just want groups of people to get on out there to cheer on the Cyclones,” Teigen said.
Students are encouraged to get into groups of 15 and have a group leader, Teigen said. Each group leader will receive a free season pass for getting a group together. The original value of each pass is $75.
The group can attend any game they want and however many they want, she said.
The cost of attending each hockey game with a group is $5 per student, a dollar cheaper than the original price, she said.
Students who attend the ISU hockey games have the opportunity to be announced as a floor during the game, Teigen said.
Residence hall floors will be allowed to set up displays at the hockey games and promote their group, Teigen said.
The hockey arena has an igloo room that the marketing department will allow the residence hall students to have pizza in before the game at a cheaper rate, she said.
Also at the meeting, Heather Minish, current IRHA leadership adviser, said Cy’s All-Campus Leadership Conference will be held Sept. 20. This year the hall having the highest percentage of students participating will receive a trophy, Minish said.
Autumn Hare, IRHA director of special events, said there has been more progress in the planning of Residence Hall Week. To kick off the week, free pizza for residence hall students will be provided by various pizza places around Ames, Hare said.
Other activities being planned for the week include karaoke in the M-Shop, “The Price is Right” and the roommate game, which will be a spin-off of a reality TV show, she said.
Friday of Residence Hall Week is Halloween and IRHA is in the process of planning a costume dance party that will be held in the former ISU dining center in Friley, Hare said.
“On Saturday the community service project will take place during the day and that night there will be a special dinner for those who volunteered and did hard work,” Hare said.
Hare said Homecoming planning is still in the works, and IRHA hopes to have residence hall students help paint victory lane this year.
