Long pass play breaks record for Danielsen
September 7, 2003
A crowd of 40,055 at Jack Trice Stadium witnessed history unfold Saturday as wide receiver Lane Danielsen broke the ISU career receiving yards record, helping the Cyclones win over Ohio.
“I didn’t even know about it until someone told me during halftime,” Danielsen said. “But it is very rewarding, and it feels good.”
Danielsen claimed the record during the second quarter with a 59-yard touchdown catch from an Austin Flynn pass.
After the quick throw left by Flynn, Danielsen broke a tackle attempt by cornerback T.J. Wright and dashed to the end zone.
“I was hoping no one was going to catch me,” he said. “I knew if I could beat the corner, the safety would have a tough time getting me.”
Flynn said Iowa State’s top four senior receivers — Danielsen, Jack Whitver, Jamaul Montgomery and Lance Young — make his job easy.
“I tossed it out to him, and he did all the work on the play,” Flynn said.
ISU head coach Dan McCarney said Danielsen is an unselfish team player who is ready to play every Saturday.
“He’s very special to this football team,” McCarney said. “When we go out and evaluate wide receivers, we try to get as many Lane Danielsens as we can.”
Danielsen surpassed Tracy Henderson’s record of 2,048 yards receiving with 102 yards receiving against the Bobcats, resetting the record at 2,077 yards. Henderson played at Iowa State from 1982—84.
Danielsen may not be finished in the receiving record book — he is also nearing the ISU career marks for touchdown catches and receptions. He needs six more touchdown catches and 29 receptions to break the two records.
Two quarterbacks now on NFL rosters, Sage Rosenfels and Seneca Wallace, threw to Danielsen during his first three seasons.
“I’m just a product of a great coaching staff and system,” he said.
“I’ve also been blessed to have the opportunity to play alongside great quarterbacks.”
