GSB will recommend alcohol-free parking as tailgating solution
September 2, 2003
Alcohol-free, student-only parking in Lot S-4 is what the Government of the Student Body plans to recommend as the way to solve problems created by the current tailgating situation, according to a new senate resolution to be introduced at Wednesday’s meeting.
The resolution, “Bringing Team Spirit to the Stadium,” states the decision to move general parking from lots next to Jack Trice Stadium to grass parking away from the stadium, across Elwood Drive, has created a lack of student presence near the stadium — a presence the resolution states is essential.
The resolution calls for a hard-surface lot near the stadium to be reserved for students, because it would create a good environment for building team spirit. By making the lot temporarily alcohol-free, the solution would remove many of the alcohol-related problems previously seen in the lot.
GSB will recommend Lot S-4 be used for this alcohol-free student area because it is currently used as overflow parking for game day operations.
Matt Denner, off-campus senator and co-author of the bill, said the resolution should be seen as a step being made by GSB toward the best possible solution to meet both student and university administration needs.
Denner said he believes the goal of this resolution is a goal the athletic department would gladly accept.
“If [the athletic department] wants to see students showing continued support for the team, they should support a student tailgating area by the stadium,” he said. “Supporting this resolution would be a good opportunity for them to correct their mistakes in pushing students away from the stadium.”
Denner said he believes the athletic department has sent out a message to students saying their support is not appreciated. He said he believes if the department does support the resolution, they would be sending out a different message, saying they do appreciate student support.
“There wasn’t a lot of time for feedback by either students or the university, but I feel the resolution will be well-received by students,” Denner said. “There will be plenty of time for feedback during the coming week and GSB will seek that feedback before a vote is taken.”
He said Off-Campus Senator William Rock, author of the bill, has had discussions with the athletic department about the possibility of moving students to an alcohol-free, student designated lot in S-4.
He also said during conversations with university officials, Vice President for Student Affairs Thomas Hill had suggested an appropriate solution to the tailgating issue would be to have an alcohol-free area for students around the stadium.
Rock, Hill and Athletic Director Bruce Van De Velde were not available for comment.
Dean of Students Pete Englin said he is thrilled with the idea and is excited GSB is requesting an alcohol-free, student lot next to the stadium.
However, Englin said he, the athletic department and the Department of Public Safety will have to review the legislation to see how the lot is being used for the fall and decide what flexibility they will have with the lot.
“It’s the dangerous drinking behavior that concerns me and this will definitely be a step toward resolving that issue, as well as bring students closer to Jack Trice,” Englin said. “If it’s not logistically possible this year, we certainly will work to make that a reality for the future.”
Englin said during summer meetings held to determine what to do with students tailgating next to the stadium, an option was offered to create an alcohol-free lot for students. He said the students who were present at those meetings did not want to commit to an alcohol-free area on hard surface parking at that time.
“They weren’t representatives of our student body and they don’t play the role GSB does, so they were reluctant to take that step,” Englin said.
He said he cannot speak for other officials from the athletic department and DPS, but said from a Student Affairs standpoint, the resolution does eliminate his concerns with students using that area.
The GSB meeting will be held at 7 p.m. in the Campanile Room of the Memorial Union.
