‘Matchstick’ premise already burned out
September 17, 2003
After an endless string of movies with twist endings, “Matchstick Men” was just not worth it.
The good news is Nicolas Cage, who plays Roy Waller, has done a movie where he’s not a grungy bad guy who’s actually a really good guy.
Waller is a con artist who suddenly discovers he has a daughter. Waller and his partner Frank, played by Sam Rockwell, are about to pull off the con of a lifetime when his psychiatrist makes a call to his ex-wife when his daughter Angela, played Alison Lohman, shows up.
This discovery turns his life upside down. What appears to be a movie where father and daughter become criminals together and live a happy Bonnie-and-Clyde life together is really not.
That’s the bad news. As good as movies that throw viewers for a loop at the end can be, director Ridley Scott could have done much better with his talents.
If this move had come out before “Basic,” “Fight Club” and “The Sixth Sense,” It might have been OK. Unfortunately, it didn’t.
