Volunteer and career day shows students social services options

More than 25 businesses will be present for the third annual Social Services Volunteer and Career Day, an event which focuses on gaining students experiences and jobs in social services.

The event will be held from 11 a.m.—2 p.m. Tuesday in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union.

Students interested in jobs, internships and volunteer opportunities will have the chance to meet prospective social service agencies, said Steve Kravinsky, director of career placement for the Colleges of Business and Liberal Arts and Sciences.

This career day differs from other career days because it gives students a unique opportunity to speak with not-for-profit organizations, Kravinsky said.

“This career fair caters to a certain segment of students interested in the social services,” Kravinsky said.

Resumes are recommended for graduating students or students seeking internships, but are not required. Most businesses are looking for interns and volunteers, Kravinsky said.

Peggy Talbert Baum, program assistant for the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics, said the day offers students interested in making the community a better place a chance to become involved.

Students can find more information on Social Services Volunteer and Career Day by going to the Career Services Web site, http://www.careers.iastate.edu/sscareerday. A list of agencies, majors and positions businesses are looking can be found on the Web site.

“It doesn’t really matter what [major] you are, it matters what you’re interested in,” Kravinsky said.
