Ames woman arrested for sister’s stabbing
September 18, 2003
Ames Police have arrested a 21-year-old Ames woman in connection with the stabbing of her sister and another male Wednesday night.
Laricia Mundell, 420 East 7th St. #D-7, was charged with three counts of going armed with intent, two counts of willful injury, one count of aggravated assault and public intoxication.
Tawanda Mundell, 20, and Frank Miller, 26, were both sent to the hospital Wednesday night with stab wounds. Tawanda Mundell, the suspect’s sister, suffered a laceration to her right hand. Miller suffered a laceration to his right shoulder. Both have been released from Mary Greeley Medical Center.
Sgt. Mark Wheeler, Ames Police, said the incident began at a bus stop off Duff Avenue near Bandshell Park. The incident began as a result of an argument over money.
“Apparently they had some words, and she left and came back [with the knife],” Wheeler said.
The argument began at the bus stop and ended near Bandshell Park, located at 6th Street and Duff Ave. Police received a call at 8:04 p.m. from someone reporting a fight between a group in that area.
Police arrived at the scene within six minutes and apprehended Laricia Mundell. Two steak knives were also found at the scene.
Tawanda Mundell and Miller, both injured, were transported to Mary Greeley Medical Center.
Police also said a third person reported being assaulted but received no injuries.
Story County Attorney Stephen Holmes said because the third person was attacked but not injured, Mundell was charged with the lesser charge of aggravated assault along with the going armed with intent and willful injury charges.
Holmes said going armed with intent and willful injury charges are Class D felonies. The maximum penalty if convicted is five years in jail and a possible fine of up to $7,500 for each felony charge.
Aggravated assault is an aggravated misdemeanor. The maximum penalty if convicted on this charge is two years in prison and a possible fine up to $5,000. Public intoxication is a simple misdemeanor.
