LETTER: America really is the ‘best’ country
September 11, 2003
While I have a similar account to Alicia Ebaugh’s of the Sept. 11 attacks, I refuse to share fault for the horrific acts of 19 Islamic extremists she claimed in her Sept. 11 column, “Sharing fault for Sept. 11.”
Are we ethnocentric? Last time I checked, it was the terrorists who believed only their creed was correct, and it is America who accepts everyone of every race and creed.
Our aggression against “inferior” nations? Perhaps if by inferior nations you meant “oppressive governments who sponsor terrorism,” then I could agree with you. The power we have in the world was earned through hard work and principles — the principles of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
So what is it that makes this country think it is the best? Because in America, we are the best. Because in America, we have religious freedom. Because in America, everyone is entitled to an education. Because in America, we tolerate unpopular speech. Because in America, everyone has a voice; everyone has the right to vote.
If America is not the best, then why are there millions who would kill just to have a taste of the freedom we have.
I want to make you an offer, Ms. Ebaugh.
Since you seem to be so ashamed of your country, I’ll raise up to $10,000 so you move to another country as long as your renounce your citizenship as an American.
Why? Because frankly, I don’t want people like you in my country.
