LETTER: Bikers: follow laws or face consequence
September 3, 2003
The sole purpose of this letter is to issue a warning to all bikers in Ames: I will hit you. Yes, you heard me right — I will hit you with my car. If you think I am kidding, think again: I’ve already done it once before. If you want, you can take a guess as to what the outcome was. The biker went off in an ambulance, and it was all his fault. All I had to do was explain what happened, give the cop my license, registration and proof of insurance, and I was free to go. (For more info on bike laws, go to the bicycle main page: www.city.ames.ia.us/worksweb/
trafficdept/Bicycleinfo/bike.htm and click on Iowa Bicycling Laws.) That biker did not follow the rules, and I hit him. No, I mangled him. And I really didn’t feel bad about it either. It is clearly stated in Iowa law that all bikers riding in the street must obey all traffic signals and signs the same as a vehicle does. Believe it or not, this includes four-way stop signs.
I am already sick of bikers ignoring these rules, and it is barely one week into the school year. This is not a good sign for you, my friends. If you don’t want to end up in the hospital stuck with a large bill, I suggest you follow the rules just like everyone else.
