ISU running back arrested on charges of drunken driving
August 1, 2003
ISU running back Hiawatha Rutland was arrested on charges of drunken driving at 2:12 a.m. Friday.
Capt. Gene Deisinger of the ISU Police said this incident was Rutland’s first offense. Rutland, senior in psychology, was driving down Welch Avenue, crossing the center line. He was stopped by ISU Police near McDonald’s, 217 Welch Ave.
Rutland failed the field sobriety test, and officers found his blood alcohol level to be .105, in excess of the legal limit of .08.
He was booked and sent to the Story County Jail, Deisinger said.
Deisinger said Rutland was traveling with another unidentified male, who was not charged.
Story County Sheriff’s officials said Rutland was released at 1:28 p.m. on his own recognizance.
Rutland led Iowa State in rushing in 2002 with 614 yards, scoring six touchdowns. He was listed as the first-team tailback after spring practices.
ISU head football coach Dan McCarney said Rutland will not practice with the first string through the season opening game against Northern Iowa, Aug. 30. He will also be suspended for that game, McCarney said.
“He is no longer co-captain of our football team,” McCarney said. “Your position as a captain is a privilege, not a right.”
Rutland pleaded guilty to possession of alcohol while under the legal age March 7, 2002.
Rutland is the second ISU offensive starter to be suspended recently. Quarterback Cris Love was arrested July 3 for drunken driving near Storm Lake. McCarney suspended Love July 22 for the Northern Iowa game.
