LETTER: Judgment requires Greek knowledge

Sorority life is becoming obsolete? I take much pride in being a member of the greek community and relish all it has to offer. When discussing this misleading article with a fraternity brother, he said, “I could write an article bashing the football team, but I was never a member of the football team.” What basis did Ms. Ebaugh have for writing this article? Has she ever experienced the relationships she thinks to be immature? Does she really think sorority life is becoming obsolete?

Where did she get her information? It was not from the sororities, all of whom hold healthy new member classes as of Bid Day last Thursday. She could not have gathered information from the Office of Greek Affairs or the Greek Councils, who get e-mails and applications daily from students expressing interest in joining Greek organizations. It was most likely not from the Dean of Students office who, according to the Greek Marketing team, says that, “Greek Life is a fantastic choice” for students. I am sure the ISU Foundation would not have expressed concerns similar to Ms. Ebaugh’s, for their records will show that a large percentage of their funding still comes from Greek alumni.

I believe Ms. Ebaugh is one of those people looking in at a strong organization, hunting for reasons why she should not be a part of it. But stop by, sit in on a meal and chat with the sisters of our organizations — I think there might be a place for you in our community. Try it out, and then see if you still think sorority life is becoming obsolete.
