LETTER: GSB decision shows student displeasure
August 28, 2003
Refusing to cover up the university’s decision to move student tailgating spots as far from the stadium as possible, with their supposed concern for our safety, is the best move by GSB I have seen or heard about in the four years I have been at Iowa State.
This sends an undeniable message to the university that students are fed up with being pushed around and told where we are going to go — instead, we will not take leftovers and be second to anyone anymore.
Iowa State obviously views students as a renewable resource it can exploit without limits or backlash, just as the City of Ames does. Why did Ames raise taxes one percent instead of raising property taxes? Because 25,000 students don’t own property, but they do spend 99 percent of their money here. And in doing so, you fund half of the new school building in Ames.
It’s the same with the athletic department. We buy their tickets to every game to support our fellow students, and we cheer and yell just as loud as anyone else in the stadium. But because of the football team’s recent successes, and because Bruce Van De Velde burned an enormous amount of bridges over the Eustachy controversy, students are being pushed around to make room for people who pay more money for their ticket.
The City of Ames really doesn’t care if you stay here after college, but the athletic department will be begging the toes it is stepping on now to come back and watch the Cyclones, buy their tickets and donate money.
I thank GSB for calling this bluff and voicing the opinion of the student body. This is a good step toward taking back our university and making this place enjoyable to students while we are here.
