Former student charged with child porn to be sentenced Friday

The sentencing of a former ISU student charged with receiving and possessing child pornography is set for Friday at the U.S. Courthouse in Des Moines, said Al Overbaugh, U.S. attorney in Des Moines.

According to Daily staff reports, Jason Lighthall was arrested in May 2002 after being suspected of having more than 7,000 images and three gigabytes of movies depicting child pornography on his campus computer. He was a freshman at the time.

Lighthall was charged in Story County with 60 Class D felony counts of promoting materials depicting sexual acts with minors and 100 serious misdemeanor counts of child pornography.

Lighthall pleaded not guilty at the state level, but when the case was moved to the federal level, he entered a guilty plea. The case was transferred to federal court because the Internet involves interstate commerce, which is under the jurisdiction of the federal court.

The maximum potential sentence for the receipt is 15 years in prison and the maximum potential sentence for the possession is five years in prison, Overbaugh said.
