LETTER: Tailgating arrests are low in numbers

This is in response to Mr. Kroeschell’s Aug. 26 letter, “Tailgating editorial was misleading.”

Mr. Kroeschell said, “I don’t know how many arrests were made in the former public parking around Jack Trice Stadium, but I know on football gameday they were more than few and far between.”

That’s funny, because I know only 27 alcohol-related citations were issued by DPS before, during and after the Texas Tech game last year — a game that was attended by 51,842 people. I don’t know about you, but I’d call 27 citations out of nearly 52,000 people few and far between. I wonder why he doesn’t have access to such information? Maybe it’s because it would render his statements invalid.

It’s ironic that Mr. Kroeschell also mentions the most discussed issues in college athletics, considering he is an administrator of the same athletic department that was universally panned for their completely inept handling of the Larry Eustachy situation.

What has caused more problems and national embarrassment for Iowa State: thousands of students making Iowa State known as one of the top tailgating spots in the country or Mr. Kroeschell’s department completely mishandling the Larry Eustachy saga?

One thing is for certain—the athletic department still doesn’t have a clue when it comes to public relations, whether it be with the students or the media.
