LETTER: Cuts violate service, volunteerism values
July 30, 2003
Congress is violating core American values of service and volunteerism as they slash funding to AmeriCorps, and, more recently, eliminate the budget for Teach For America. More than 1.2 million students will be hurt by the Bush administration’s decisions.
Once again, the administration chose tax cuts for the wealthy instead of supporting our schools and communities. Congress will convene at the end of this week to consider funding for AmeriCorps, including Teach For America. The Bush administration and our leaders in Congress must act now to save these vital components of our communities and our country.
