LETTER: Tailgating space was already too limited

The university is hurting the students it is supposed to serve again, trying to eliminate tailgating. First of all, there isn’t enough area for tailgating as it is. For example, my friends and I, along with many other ISU fans, waited on South 16th Street for numerous hours before the Nebraska game trying to get into the stadium parking for tailgating only to be forced to the intramural field parking lots. The line of tailgaters stretched all the way to Duff Avenue, and you are going to take away tailgating space?

Second of all, how convenient is it to cover an issue like this during the summer time when many of the students that this issue affects aren’t even around Ames? Many of the students that are in Ames don’t read the paper on a daily basis. By doing this in the summer, there is less opposition by students and less opinion letters in the paper.

And lastly, it is so nice of Bruce Van De Velde to offer the alumni more parking closer to the stadium. Get in good with the football donors to try and save your job after the Eustachy incident — it just shows what a high-class athletic director we have here at Iowa State.

Don’t forget who you are supposed to be serving here; yes, athletic donors are important and they already have the commuter lot to park/tailgate in, but the student support is also important. If you take away tailgating area, you will lose student support.
