The Mississippi Board of Trustees will vote Thursday to determine whether Peter Rabideau, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, will be offered a position at Mississippi State.

The recommendation that Rabideau be appointed is on Thursday’s agenda for the Board of Trustees, said Joe Farris, director of university relations for Mississippi State.

If approved, Rabideau will be offered the position of provost and vice president of academic affairs at Mississippi State.

“It’s the number two position on campus,” Rabideau said.

Ben Allen holds the same position at Iowa State that Mississippi State will offer Rabideau if the board approves.

Farris said Rabideau would be directly responsible for the eight academic colleges at the university.

In the absence of the president, Rabideau would act as chief officer of Mississippi State, Farris said.

Rabideau declined to comment on whether he would accept the position if the appointment is approved by the Mississippi Board of Trustees.

According to the board agenda item, Rabideau will be offered a 12-month salary of $205,000.

Currently, Rabideau makes $169,744 annually at Iowa State.

Farris said personnel appointments made by the presidents of universities governed by the Board of Trustees are typically approved.

Rabideau took over as dean of LAS July 1, 1999. Rabideau served as dean of the College of Basic Sciences at Louisiana State from 1990 to 1999.

According to the board agenda item, Rabideau will assume his duties as soon as possible but will start at Mississippi State no later than Sept. 1.
