Van De Velde to serve on national NCAA committee
June 4, 2003
ISU Athletics Director Bruce Van De Velde has been appointed to a national committee that deals with how teams qualify for various NCAA championship competitions.
Van De Velde will serve a four-year term on the NCAA Championships and Competition Cabinet.
He will join Big 12 Associate Commissioner DruAnn Hancock and Missouri Athletic Director Mike Alden as Big 12 representatives.
“Bruce is a fine selection,” Alden said. “I enjoy working with Bruce on many issues in the Big 12 and am anxious to work with him on issues of national interest, as well.”
Van De Velde is replacing Bill Byrne, athletic director at Texas A & M, whose term expires in July.
“Bill Byrne always brought back great information, and I know he represented the Big 12 conference extremely well,” Van De Velde said.
The committee supervises qualification and selection procedures for Division I championships and maintains oversight responsibility for playing regulations in the areas of financial impact, player safety and the image of the sport, according to the NCAA’s Web site, www.ncaa.org.
It also reviews recommendations from sports committees regarding the administration of national championships.
To become a part of this cabinet, Van De Velde was nominated and voted in by other Big 12 athletic directors.
“I was extremely happy with my appointment; I am really looking forward to serving with many of my colleagues nationwide,” Van De Velde said.
The cabinet has advised many changes in Division I-A. Some examples include limiting the number of bowl games in football, setting season start dates for various sports and addressing injury concerns in pole vaulting.
“I am really looking forward to being involved in the governance of related issues, for example, bowl game certification, policy-making of championships and serving student athletes,” Van De Velde said.
Van De Velde will also serve on a football issues committee.
His first meeting as a member of the cabinet will be held June 24—26 in Bonita Springs, Fla.
