Peoples Productions hosts live music gala
June 11, 2003
Peoples Productions has the solution to your summer boredom woes. If you’re itching for some good live music this summer, this may be just what you’re looking for.
The Alive Concert Series at Simon Estes Amphitheater in Des Moines will commence on June 14 with a concert by the Nadas and Hello Dave. This will be followed by a series of weekend concerts that will extend throughout the summer. The entire series will come to an end on Labor Day weekend with a three-day event called the Alive Music Festival.
The whole idea for the musical event originated last summer, when Tom Zmolek, owner of People’s Bar and Grill, 2428 Lincoln Way, and Jason Walsmith of the Nadas decided the Simon Estes Amphitheater wasn’t being used to its full potential.
“In the past, concerts were only held on Wednesday and Thursday nights,” Zmolek says.
The two decided to combine their efforts to hold live concerts on the weekends.
But after having just released their new album, the Nadas left and went on tour, leaving Walsmith unable to help much with the planning of the event.
This is when Zmolek partnered up with Kari Smith to help plan the event.
“She has good connections,” Zmolek says. Previously, Smith has helped the Nadas with organization and promotion of their shows.
“These are the things I really needed help with,” Zmolek says.
Zmolek and Smith have announced the dates and performers of five concerts.
They are showcasing such bands as the Nadas, Gov’t Mule, Gin Blossoms, Seven Mary Three and Dark Star Orchestra.
“I’m really excited to see the Nadas and Gov’t Mule,” says Alicia Cobb, 22, of Fort Dodge.
Zmolek says five more dates are yet to be added and will be announced in the next two weeks.
Not only is the current list of performers attractive to concert-goers, the venue itself stands out from the average concert site. The Des Moines River runs directly behind the stage of the amphitheater.
Tickets are available at the Keg Shop, 218 Welch Ave., and at Peoples Bar and Grill, as well as by phone at 292-0502.
