Men’s golfer heads to championship
ISU golfer Corey Schultz won an amateur golf sectional qualifier Monday to advance to the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships.
Schultz, a sophomore, shot 139 over 36 holes to win the event at the Copper Creek golf course in Pleasant Hill.
The championship rounds of the competition will take place July 14—19 in Galloway, N.J. Two rounds of stroke play will narrow the field from 156 to 64 players, and then those remaining golfers will participate in a match play tournament to determine a champion. That champion has traditionally been invited to play the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Ga. the following season.
Three other Cyclones — Tyler Brady, Jeremy Lyons and Adam Hertzke — finished in the top eight at the sectional qualifier. Schultz was the only golfer to advance to the championship competition.

Sherman, Williams eliminated from NCAA competition
Junior Susan Sherman and freshman Rebecca Williams competed for Iowa State’s women’s track and field team in preliminary competition at the NCAA championships Wednesday, with neither advancing to later rounds.
The competition is being hosted by Sacramento State University this week in Sacramento, Calif.
Sherman finished 18th in the discus with her throw of 154—0. The top 12 advanced to finals competition.
“Susan was really disappointed about today,” head women’s coach Dick Lee said. “It seemed as if no one really threw well today; not even the defending national champion moved on to finals today.”
Williams ran the 100-meter hurdles first round in 14.14 seconds, good for 26th place. 18 runners advanced to the semifinals.
“This was a very good experience for her to have for future performances,” Lee said. “The first time at nationals can be very nerving and she had a loaded heat. She stayed calm, didn’t get the start she quite wanted, but still ran a solid race.”
Senior high jumper Gina Rickert begins her quest for an NCAA title Thursday afternoon in the high jump qualifying round at 6 p.m. CDT. If Rickert advances to the finals, she will compete again Saturday evening.
