USC assistant coach joins Morgan’s staff

Iowa State’s men’s basketball coaching staff, only two members strong one month ago, is now in danger of running out of chairs on the sideline after the introduction of two new assistants Wednesday.
Damon Archibald, after spending three seasons at the University of Southern California, will join head coach Wayne Morgan’s staff this fall and gives the Cyclone staff coaches with recruiting connections on both coasts, along with the Midwest.
Fred Quartlebaum, an assistant to former North Carolina head coach Matt Doherty, was officially added to the staff Wednesday, although Morgan had announced his hire last week.
The construction of Morgan’s first coaching staff means the Cyclones could have an impressive nationwide recruiting base in future years.
Archibald and Quartlebaum join a staff that already includes Morgan, a longtime assistant at Syracuse; former Cyclone player Jeff Grayer, who has coached in the Continental Basketball Association and is from basketball hotbed Flint, Mich.; Bob Sundvold and administrative assistant David Edwards.
Morgan, Sundvold, and Edwards are the only holdovers from former head coach Larry Eustachy’s staff, and each will be serving in new roles this season.
Another former Cyclone who played with Grayer, Barry Stevens, has also expressed interest in a position with the men’s basketball program and has met several times with Morgan and ISU athletic director Bruce Van De Velde.
Archibald left USC for Iowa State despite two NCAA Tournament appearances by the Trojans in his three seasons. Iowa State has not reached the NCAA Tournament since the 2000—2001 season.
“I am excited to be a basketball coach coming to a school, city and state where people love basketball,” Archibald said. “I made a decision to go to Iowa State because I will get a chance to work with Wayne Morgan at a premier program.”
At USC, Archibald coordinating the Trojans’ recruiting, defense, and individual workouts.
Quartlebaum coached with Doherty for four seasons, including three at North Carolina.
Morgan had praise for both new coaches.
“[Quartlebaum] comes from a great coaching background and a tremendous pedigree,” he said. “[Archibald] is a coach I have known for a long time. His growth as a coach and person has been phenomenal.”
Morgan was promoted from assistant to head coach May 14 after Eustachy resigned May 5.
