Morgan recruits assistant coaches

Wayne Morgan’s men’s basketball coaching staff is beginning to take shape.

Morgan announced the hiring of North Carolina assistant Fred Quartlebaum at Monday’s Story County Cyclone Club banquet.

Former Cyclone Jeff Grayer will join the staff as a student assistant while he finishes work on his degree in consumer science.

Barry Stevens, who played with Grayer under former Cyclone coach Johnny Orr in the mid-1980s, is also seeking a position on the basketball staff.

“This dates back,” Grayer said. “[Stevens and I] always wanted to come back to Iowa State.”

Stevens said he has been looking at the Cyclone program for a long time.

“Every time there’s been a coaching vacancy, I’ve inquired [about it],” he said.

Grayer helped create the Flint Fuze franchise in the Continental Basketball Association in Flint, Mich., and coached them in the 2001—2002 season.

Last season, he coached the Great Lakes Storm with Stevens as an assistant.

Grayer said the opportunity to finish his bachelor’s degree was important to him.

“When I start something, I want to finish it out,” he said. “It’s never too late.”

Grayer achieved one of his goals by becoming a first-round NBA draft pick in 1988 after an outstanding career at Iowa State. He played nine seasons with five teams in the NBA.

Iowa State made three trips to the NCAA Tournament during Grayer’s career.

His senior season, he averaged 25.3 points per game and earned second-team All-America honors.

Grayer also won an Olympic bronze medal with the U.S. Olympic team at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

“Our team is fortunate to have someone with Jeff’s experience involved in our program,” Morgan said.

Stevens said he plans to interview for a job next week.

He said he thought he could help Iowa State as a recruiter in the Midwest and use his experience as a coach and player to help the Cyclones.

Quartlebaum was an assistant to former North Carolina and Notre Dame coach Matt Doherty for a total of four seasons.

“He’s someone very well liked across America,” Morgan said.

His hiring means we have somebody who is respected,” he said.

Grayer and Stevens rank first and second, respectively, on Iowa State’s career scoring list. Grayer scored 2,502 points from 1984-1988 and Stevens scored 2,190 points from 1981—1985.

Two members of last season’s staff will be retained in new roles.

Bob Sundvold will remove from administrative assistant to assistant coach, and David Edwards will remain as video coordinator and be an administrative assistant.

Morgan was promoted from assistant coach to head coach on May 14, nine days after former ISU coach Larry Eustachy resigned because of public furor regarding published photos of him drinking and kissing college-aged girls at a private party in Columbia, Mo. on Jan. 21.
