LETTER: Public should judge opinions for selves
June 23, 2003
As uncomfortable or offensive Margie Phelps’ letter was, I disagree with Dr. Raverty’s attempt in his June 19 letter to silence freedom of expression in public forums.
I also disagree with you about Alicia Ebaugh’s and the Daily’s freedom of the press. Your personal attack aside, your analogies just don’t stand scrutiny. Use of ignorant, bigoted words in public speech is ok for some people, but not others?
One person’s free expression can too easily be called “hate speech” by another attempting to squelch that expression. I prefer to hear all voices, and form my own opinions. I rely on the Daily and many other media outlets to help me find those voices.
I am glad you and I have the opportunity to let our views known. Freedom of speech and the press belong to all of us.
