LETTER: Coach not acting like a role model
May 1, 2003
I am writing to express my opinion about the recent misconduct of Coach Larry Eustachy. It seems many ISU students are in favor of reinstating him, despite his all too student-like conduct.
Eustachy, however, is what used to be called a role model — meaning prominent people in the public eye, leaders and shapers of young lives. These people, simply because of their position, have a responsibility to be better than ‘only human’ and set higher standards for the rest of us.
The coach should be terminated, not because of his alcoholism or his snogging sorority girls (both of which would normally be matters between him and his wife), but because of his failing to use adequate good judgment as a public figure.
