LETTER: Eustachy deserves a second chance
April 30, 2003
In the words of Dick Vitale, “Let’s give the guy a second shot. He has admitted he made a mistake, and hopefully he will learn from that. I believe it can be rectified.”
I too believe he deserves a second chance. Everyone seems so concerned about the bad publicity, but look at what could be done if he was given this chance. On ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption” Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon discussed how America loves stories that show how an alcoholic has turned their life around and iS getting better. What a good story and good publicity it would be for Coach Eustachy to get a second chance and continue to be the great coach that we know he can be. I’m sure that if he is terminated, more people are going to say that Iowa State should have given him another chance to prove himself.
People, especially Cyclone “fans,” have judged him too harshly. Think about it. Would you rather have a coach who can legally drink and admits to being an alcoholic, or have a coach who illegally pays his players, illegally recruits, illegally has the grades changed of an athlete or supports a player who assaults or rapes someone?
People have been so quick to condemn Coach Eustachy. You are all a bunch of hypocrites. I know I have done things I wasn’t proud of. Have you never done something you regret? Are you all so perfect and live untarnished lives? Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.
