LETTER: Iowa State must stand behind coach

After reading article after article about the conduct of our men’s basketball coach Larry Eustachy, I came to ask myself one question. Are Iowa State students for or against this person? It seems to me that the Iowa State students (these are the ones who pay his wages) are for Mr. Eustachy to remain a coach at Iowa State, yet it is his friends and colleagues who want him out.

I am only a freshman. As a British native, I arrived here last September and heard straight away of Mr. Eustachy and his great achievements at Iowa State since he arrived. He seemed somewhat of a hero and a lot of people here spoke highly of him and were proud when using his name. It was during his good times when everyone was behind him, supporting him and waiting for his next success story.

Now Mr. Eustachy has made a mistake, admitted it and wants to seek help, but where did all those people go— those who told me so much about him, those who were there through his good times but don’t want to stand by him through the bad? His team is still there for him, that is obvious. Where is Iowa State? Why aren’t they fighting with him? Not for him or against, but with him.

If I were in England it would be all for one. When someone is asking for help should we not reach out a branch and offer our support? Are we not strong enough to stand up for one of our own? I think its about time Mr. Eustachy’s “friends” showed him the support he needs and let him correct his mistakes on the court.
