Men’s, women’s track teams find success in Iowa City
May 4, 2003
The ISU track teams visited Iowa City on Saturday, taking four victories at the Musco Twilight meet hosted by the University of Iowa.
Daniel Kaczmarczyk was the sole winner from the men’s squad, taking the long jump.
Gina Rickert, Jessica Huff and Cara Van Eck each picked up a win for the women.
In the team race, the women took fourth with 64 points. The men placed fifth with 79 points. Minnesota won the women’s race with 158 points, while Illinois claimed the men’s title with 123.5 points.
Kaczmarczyk’s jump of 24-2 3/4 was enough to top the field, but he has jumped better. Men’s coach Steve Lynn said conditions were not ideal for jumping.
“He wanted to jump farther than that, but he beat some good people,” Lynn said. “The conditions were not conducive to good performances in the jumps because of the wind.”
Kaczmarczyk’s win was offset by a disappointment for fellow long jumper Tony Douglas. Douglas had recently returned to action following his recovery from a hamstring injury, but he re-injured the hamstring on Saturday.
One of the other top places for the men’s team was earned by the 4×100 relay. The team of James Lopes, Jerod Torrey, Jared Graham and Kaczmarczyk took third with a time of 40.62 seconds, good enough to qualify for the regional meet.
Lynn said the time was especially impressive because the team had “one really bad handoff and another that wasn’t very good.”
Huff and Van Eck gave the ISU women strong representation in the middle-distance races. Huff claimed the 800-meter run in 2:10.20, while Van Eck won the 1,500 in 4:33.01.
Huff usually runs the 1,500 rather than the 800, but women’s coach Dick Lee wanted to give her some speed work.
“That was the fastest 400 she’s ever gone out in,” he said. “She was sitting in third with about 300 meters left, but she was able to pass some people and get the win.”
Fellow Cyclone Jenny Mockler was close behind Huff, taking third in 2:12.04.
Although Rickert won the high jump, her winning leap of 5-8 3/4 was sub-par by her standards. Nonetheless, Lee was not worried.
“For her, it was hard to come back the week after Drake,” he said. Rickert cleared 6-0 at two separate competitions at the Drake Relays last weekend.
The teams will now turn their focus toward the Big 12 championships May 17-19.
