LETTER: Punishment needed for coach’s actions
April 30, 2003
Unless you live in a cave, I’m sure you now know about Iowa State men’s basketball coach Larry Eustachy’s mishaps following losses to Missouri and Kansas State. I think it’s ridiculous to even question whether he should be punished, reprimanded, or even fired; of course he should! Just think, what would he do if one of his players did the same thing? Although it was only verified by a student at Missouri, Eustachy was witnessed saying his team was no good. Again, what would happen if he found one of his players saying this?
I find it embarrassing to know Coach Eustachy is representing the state of Iowa and Iowa State University in the way he is. Though he has done many good things for Iowa State basketball, he has also done many negative things. He has won the college basketball National Coach of the Year award and many of his players have won Big 12 Player of the Week awards. However, his actions in seasons past, including recent events and his ejection in the Michigan State game in the 2000 Elite Eight of the national tournament, raise the need for a National Ass of the Week award.
If I were a high school senior recruited by Coach Eustachy to play basketball at Iowa State, I would rather not play than play for someone who holds a different and a more lax set of standards for himself in comparison to his players. All of our athletes deserve better than that.
