LETTER: Coach should focus on family problems

This season has been tough on ISU basketball, from the disappointing record, to the assistant coach being charged with child porn possession and now this. Given past successes with basketball, this is quite the crash.

To the university: Despite all of this drama, the right decisions have been made. Coach Eustachy needs to step down as head coach of ISU men’s basketball. His actions documented so far have brought Iowa State embarrassment. The fact that this story even got out was a freak of nature. It is safe to say that there are many more stories of Eustachy that may soon come out in the near future. The university did the right thing by distancing itself from Eustachy now to insulate itself from current and future embarrassment. In doing so it set a precedent throughout the university and possibly even the NCAA that this behavior will not be tolerated from anyone.

To Coach Eustachy: Despite your behavior, so well-documented in Monday’s Des Moines Register, you were the better leader, better coach and better man. While Mr. Van De Velde whined about lawyers and timing, you came out and gave us the scoop, straight and honest. However, you have a long journey ahead of you that must embark upon without distraction. Take this time to focus on dealing with your sickness and taking care of your family. You are an excellent coach, and when you are ready, you will find there will be many top programs willing to take you. But for now, your focus must be on rebuilding Team Eustachy. Fare thee well coach, and God bless you. Let this rebuilding project lead you to a long string of new success stories.
