Memorial, speed limits on council agenda

Issues pertaining to a Veterans Memorial, speed limits and annexation are planned to be discussed at Tuesday’s city council meeting.

Councilman Steve Goodhue said the council will vote on a proposal to make the corner of 5th Street and Grand Avenue the site of a new Veterans Memorial in Ames. Originally, the Veterans Memorial Committee wanted the building to be across the street from City Hall, but there were concerns with parking, Goodhue said.

“It’s a wonderful memorial, but it needed to be elsewhere,” Goodhue said.

The council will introduce an ordinance reducing the speed limit on the curve where George Washington Carver Avenue turns into Bloomington Road from 55 mph to 45 mph.

Goodhue said residents of the area have expressed concerns about cars speeding on the road.

“I think that over time we’ve attempted to decrease the speed limit to deal with speeding issues,” Goodhue said.

The speed limit will not be decreased to less than 45 mph, said Goodhue, although some residents requested it be 35 mph.

Councilman Russ Cross said the decrease is due to residential development in the area.

Cross said it probably makes sense to lower the speed limit of the curve, but it is a “minor deal.”

Also on the council’s agenda is a proposal regarding tax rates for annexed areas. Cross said a city staff member discovered that the city can allow a tax decrease as an incentive to annex areas into the city. Cross said this is a positive find, since areas generally have no reason to become part of the city because of the city’s higher taxes.

At the beginning of the meeting the council will vote to renew the liquor license for the Boheme Bistro, 2900 West Street.

Councilwoman Sharon Wirth knows of no problems regarding the renewal.

In 2000 the Boheme Bistro faced difficulties in renewing their liquor license because they had 14 violations that year. It was granted a temporary six-month license.

Goodhue said the review of the Boheme Bistro found they only had two offenses in the past year.

The council meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers in City Hall, 515 Clark Ave.
