Visitor parking a focus for Frederiksen council elections
April 21, 2003
On Tuesday, Frederiksen Court residents will have the chance to vote for representatives who will tackle issues including a new visitor parking plan, getting wireless access for apartments and getting students involved in Frederiksen Court decision making.
It is important for students to be aware of the people who are running and informed on the positions they will be in, said Linda Shaw, current chairwoman for Frederiksen Court Community Council. These people will be “making decisions that will directly affect the people living out here,” she said.
Students can vote from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Frederiksen Court Community Center. The election is open to Frederiksen residents, and student identification must be shown in order to vote. There are currently three building clusters’ positions where no one is running, said Mary Beth Golemo, program coordinator for Frederiksen and council adviser.
The students run to represent clusters of Frederiksen buildings or serve as at-large representatives on the council. After the external election, those chosen will vote internally for the executive positions, including the chief representative, secretary and treasurer, she said. The council “selects their own leader from within,” Golemo said.
The council has existed since fall 2000 when Frederiksen was first opened to residents. It serves as the “voice and the minds of the residents,” she said.
She said the improvements made by the council probably don’t mean anything for non-residents, but are very significant to residents.
Golemo said the council works together for the sake of the community. It examines standard issues, such as the terms and conditions contract, she said.
Each year the council is also asked whether it will support rate increases for Frederiksen proposed by Randy Alexander, the director of housing for the Department of Residence, Golemo said.
The council heavily debated the implementation of a recycling program this year, she said; the program was not instituted.
Visitor parking was also a large problem this year, Golemo said. The council sent an e-mail survey to residents and also organized a town meeting to get feedback about the issue, she said.
The council is now considering a proposal for naming the streets within Frederiksen Court, and it recently purchased exterior door decals for the building doors, Golemo said. She said a proposal to have the residence department purchase bar stools for each apartment was also approved.
