Ames woman struck by car recovering
April 4, 2003
An Ames woman who sprinted across three lanes of traffic and was struck by an oncoming car was listed in fair medical condition Thursday night.
Emily Evans, age 20, was injured when she darted across the street while on her way to K-Mart Thursday afternoon. The accident occurred at 4 p.m. near the intersection of South Duff Avenue and Crystal Street.
Evans was treated at Mary Greeley Medical Center for loss of consciousness, multiple abrasions and a dislocated right knee. She has not been released.
Avis Vanwyk, 3933 10th St., Des Moines, was driving southbound in a teal Pontiac Grand Prix that struck Evans. Vanwyk’s father, Steve Patterson of Grand Junction, was the only passenger in the car.
Witnesses at the scene of the accident described Evans sprinting west across three lanes of packed traffic on South Duff Avenue before she was hit by Vanwyk.
Sally Shaver, 123 E. 9th St., was driving north on South Duff Avenue and witnessed the accident.
“All that basically happened was they were going south, and the girl ran out in front of them,” Shaver said. “I saw the girl starting to run across the street. She ran right out in front of them.”
Vanwyk said she did not see Evans until it was too late.
“I just saw her when she came in front of the van in the turning lane,” Vanwyk said. “I don’t know where she had been or where she was going.”
Patterson said all three lanes of the street were heavy with traffic when the accident occurred.
“I didn’t see her till she got hit,” he said.
Ames Police Lt. Mike Brennan said Evans had moved to Ames very recently.
“We understand she was on her way to K-Mart,” Brennan said. “It was her destination. She just ran out in front of traffic.”
Brennan said Evans’ injuries did not seem extremely serious.
“They haven’t found anything seriously wrong,” he said. “Right now, it’s kind of scrapes and bruises. It doesn’t seem real serious.”
Brennan said Ames Police Officer Susie Owens has not completed her investigation of the accident at this time. He said based on the information the Ames Police have received so far, Evans walked out in front of traffic and was most likely at fault.
“I would think there are probably not going to be any charges filed against the driver of the vehicle,” he said.
Brennan said the Ames Police Department received four or five calls from cellular phones alerting them of the accident.
