LETTER: Professors ignore Dead Week rules
April 23, 2003
I was checking my exam times on the registrar Web site and I happened to come across the Dead Week guidelines. Letter “C” says, “Major course assignments should be due no later than the Friday prior to Dead Week. Exceptions include class presentations by students, semester-long projects such as a design project assignment in lieu of a final, and extensions of the deadline requested by individual students.” (http://www.iastate.e-du/~registrar/exams/deadweek.html).
I have a project worth 11 percent of my grade due April 29 and another project worth 20 percent of my grade due May 1. I don’t know about you, but 11 percent of a grade is a lot to me, and 20 percent can make or break a final grade! Let’s not forget the added bonuses of a test on May 2 and studying for six finals during Dead Week.
What is the use of these so-called guidelines if they aren’t enforced? This isn’t just a coincidence, either. It happened to me last semester and it’s happening to others I know right now.
I realize there is probably nothing that can be done now, but I certainly hope some action will be taken before classes begin again.
