Man charged with assault after threats

An ISU senior was arrested Friday evening in Friley Hall after a woman reported the man threatened her with a knife, said ISU Police Capt. Gene Deisinger.
Minh Mgoc Hon Tran, 24, of 4605 Ontario St., was arrested by ISU Police Friday and charged with aggravated assault and interference with official acts. Tran is a senior in electrical engineering.
Deisinger said police reports indicated Tran had gone to a girlfriend’s residence hall room in Friley and wanted to take a laptop computer. When the girlfriend did not allow him to take the computer, Tran picked up two knives and held them “in a threatening manner,” Deisinger said.
Reports indicate Tran stabbed a knife into a dresser.
Deisinger said the knives appeared to be three and a half to four inch serrated knives.
“Apparently the defendant and his girlfriend had been in a relationship for the past several months,” Deisinger said.
He said the police reports stated the girlfriend wanted to end the relationship.
When ISU Police officers arrived on the scene, Tran was sitting on the bed.
A knife was not in view, but Tran would not show officers his hands. Tran did not cooperate with the officers and had to be physically subdued, Deisinger said. Tran has been processed and transferred to the Story County Jail.
