LETTER: Trip overseas alters anti-war views

This letter is in response to nothing. It is just a different point of view about the war.

This semester I am studying abroad in Wales. I have had the opportunity to view many war protests, and have seen them from a different viewpoint. Many of the protests seem to be more anti-American than anti-war. Before I left the States I was completely against the war, but now my mind has changed.

A group of us just visited Dachau, the concentration camp. Walking around inside of the camp, seeing the showers, viewing the ovens and walking on the ground where thousands of innocent people died really set a new tone for this war. It was a radical dictator who set up this camp, and killed 6 million Jews. Who’s to say that Saddam isn’t just as bad? He has shown that he has no qualms about killing innocent people.

No war is good, but sometimes, like in World War II, it is necessary. Death is never good, but no matter what we should all rally behind our nation. We should support our troops who are risking their lives for the very freedoms that we all enjoy.

Studying abroad has opened my eyes to the views others hold of us as Americans. Many of these views are based on stereotypes portrayed from media sources. This experience has reaffirmed my faith in my country, and made me proud of being an American.
