City Council to vote on summer hockey programs, road reconstruction project
April 21, 2003
The Ames City Council will vote Tuesday night on a resolution denying payment of a claim filed against the City of Ames.
Northern Edge, a national hockey camp promoter, filed a $12,500 claim against the city due to the cancellation of the promoter’s summer hockey school. Before this summer, Al Murdoch, coach of the ISU men’s hockey team, had run the only hockey summer school in Ames because of limited demand and an advanced spending requirement, according to a City Council Action Form.
According to the form, Murdoch believed two hockey camps were unnecessary in Ames and confronted the director of Ames Parks and Recreation, ultimately causing the director to cancel Northern Edge’s hockey summer hockey school. In response, Northern Edge’s attorney filed the claim against the city.
Ames Mayor Ted Tedesco said the confusion over the issue arose because Northern Edge never knew the contract with Murdoch was exclusive.
“We aren’t under an obligation [to pay them] because there was never a formal contract signed with Northern Edge,” Tedesco said.
Although Northern Edge didn’t have a contract to use the arena, it continued to register students.
Stephen Hardy, Northern Edge’s attorney, said not issuing a contract will create problems. Hardy said if the city backs out of granting Northern Edge a contract, the problem will be “greatly compounded,” according to a March 25 memo from Hardy.
The City Council will also vote on a resolution approving final plans for the Sixth Street reconstruction, which will detour the red and green CyRide routes until the project is finished.
“The red route will run a few blocks longer than normal, and the green route has also changed to accommodate the red route,” said Jason Slater, dispatcher for CyRide.
The council meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers in City Hall, 515 Clark Ave.
