LETTER: Suspend Keller from teaching
April 27, 2003
In America, we have always heard, “innocent until proven guilty by peers.”
I was not there and did not witness the engagement between Doug Ray and Joe Keller (“Anti-Semitic verbal assault leads to arrest,” April 25), but based on the fact that the professor was the one who reported this incident, I would like to see an instant suspension of Keller in teaching all math classes until the internal investigation is complete.
At that time, if there is evidence to support the professor’s claim, I hope it is ISU policy to not hesitate and expel and refuse him graduation status.
In this day and age, this is not “sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”
This is serious and ISU’s reputation in how they handle this situation is on the line.
I want to represent a university that will stand up and protect every individual. We are adults now and will tolerate nothing less than full respect of every student who goes here.
I too have a dream that from this day forth, we will respect every individual and celebrate our different cultures without giving up our rights to disagree in a non-threatening, non-violent way.
