LETTER: Books, not Bombs about costs of war
April 2, 2003
I am writing this in regards to the Books, not Bombs protest. Having attended this protest, I would like to say that the organizers have done a wonderful job. I believe this protest was about the economic cost of war and how it has taken a toll on us at home.
I think that Adam Schettler should have waited until after the protest to actually write a letter saying that the protesters were missing the facts.
Education will never be above safety, but what is safety? Is safety wiping out a country halfway across the world knowing that none of their missiles can reach us?
If you are talking safety, my friend, I think there are many things that are now unsafe because of the war in Iraq. Why wouldn’t terrorists start terrorizing now more than ever? How about the safety of Arab-Americans who have to endure racism and hate crimes because the country is at war with an Arab country?
You’re right, we should not be all hung up about education, but it is not safety from Iraq that you should be worried about. The fact that our government has taken away some of our rights under the Patriot Act is what you should be worried about.
By the way, as for Iraqi oil, yes we are there for the oil. Why do you think that the Bush Administration said that any Iraqi caught burning an oil well in Iraq will be punished?
If Adam Schettler and anyone else supports the war good for them. Just open your eyes to different opinions and ideas, you’d be surprised what you learn.
