EDITORIAL: Twombley did little, left little behind

With only three more meetings to go, Keith Twombley has resigned his Inter-Residence Hall Association presidency. Why is this an important and newsworthy revelation?

We’re not sure, either.

Twombley’s reasons for the resignation lie in a large amount of medical bills he has acquired since suffering heart attack-like symptoms. He said he has had to take on a second job to help pay for his medical expenses and doesn’t believe the balance between his duties as IRHA president and his personal life could be found.

We don’t mean to be heartless, but it’s no coincidence that a bill calling for Twombley’s impeachment was going to be presented at last week’s IRHA meeting. In light of the resignation, members of the association said they were “surprised” by the announcement. Why would this come as a surprise? Twombley just jumped from a sinking ship, electing for an option that was the lesser of two evils.

IRHA represents a large constituency. If properly represented, IRHA would have a very powerful voice. And, personal reasons aside, Twombley hasn’t really shown any initiative this year in furthering that voice other than getting 500 residence hall students to vote in the national election. And yes, IRHA played a role in getting a sliding scale for the 75/25 plan. Sadly, though, two accomplishments for the whole year are insignificant.

It’s odd that, despite a year of meager “accomplishments,” Twombley did find the time to maintain and solicit content for his personal Web site, bellybuttonporn.com, which features the midriffs of many IRHA members and constituents.

Thank you, Mr. President. This doesn’t exactly help the image of an organization that already lacks credibility.

IRHA leaders are so unprofessional that Twombley’s resignation, which was announced initially only to the Daily and then-Vice President Jessi Raim, that Daily editors had to question whether it was just Twombley’s idea of an April Fools prank.

Now Raim is at the head of the sinking ship, but she too is a laughable excuse of leadership. In a meeting with Daily editors in the fall — one which Twombley forgot to attend — Raim admitted she knows little of campus news because she considers it a weakness for student leaders to be “influenced” by anything but textbooks so they can remain impartial to all things. Impartial and ignorant are very different things.

The new IRHA executive-elects need to take an active role in the image they believe IRHA needs to represent to be an effective governing body.

We suggest focusing on the issues facing your constituents, rather than focusing on your constituents’ bare stomachs.

Good luck with that.
