Homan pleads guilty
April 3, 2003
Jared Homan, starting center for the ISU men’s basketball team, pleaded guilty Saturday to public intoxication charges.
Homan, sophomore in finance, was arrested by Ames Police officers at 11:55 p.m. on the 100th block of Main Street on March 28 and charged with public intoxication.
Ames Police Cmdr. Jim Robinson said Homan was held at the Ames Police station after his arrest. He said people arrested for alcohol violations are typically held in the jail for a minimum of four hours.
“Jared went before the judge in the morning,” Robinson said. “I believe he pled guilty and was fined.”
Head coach Larry Eustachy issued a written statement on Wednesday.
“We have met with Jared and discussed the serious nature of this incident,” Eustachy said. “He will be disciplined internally, consistent with team rules.”
Team spokesman Mike Green said Eustachy was on the road to attend the National Association of Basketball Coaches convention held in New Orleans and would have no further comment on the matter.
Homan, 20, is not the first in the men’s basketball program to face charges this year.
Reserve Clint Varley was arrested for drunken driving on Feb. 23 and Omar Bynum, a forward who just finished his senior season with the team, was arrested for operating while intoxicated and possession of marijuana last June. Chris Alexander, who has since left the team for personal reasons, was charged with serious assault last October and eventually pleaded guilty to a lesser charge. Most recently, former assistant coach Randy Brown resigned on March 3 following charges of possession and receipt of child pornography.
Homan, a 6-foot-9, 250-pound sophomore from Remsen averaged 7.5 points and 6.4 rebounds for the Cyclones last season.
He led the squad with 58 blocks and started all but two of Iowa State’s games.
