LETTER: War costs could affect tuition costs
April 6, 2003
Not a bad letter, Doug, but I’d like to make two points. First, your argument that “people who hate the United States don’t need missiles to attack us” is often used to justify the disarmament of Iraq. While Iraq’s disarmament may be important, that argument is worded such that it won’t matter if Iraq is disarmed because they’ll still be able to reach us, even without their nearly obsolete, short-range missiles.
Secondly, your correct observation that the war has only been going on for two weeks is irrelevant to your argument that it won’t significantly affect education funding. Haven’t you watched the movie “Blank Check”? That kid spends a million bucks pretty quickly, and the United States has followed suit, allocating something around $75 billion to the war effort. That won’t all come from the already ravaged education budget, but you can be sure that some will. I’m not saying the war allocation is good or bad, but if you’re concerned about already high tuition costs, be ready for more.
