LETTER: Critical thinking needed on war
April 6, 2003
Passionate and diverse voices have arisen in the local turmoil surrounding the Iraq war. Good. This is a weighty moment. Thousands of lives are ending. We are creating moral, economic, political and ecological realities that will shape the world.
Those privileged to be in a university community have a responsibility to face facts bravely, to be open to divergent views, and to foster open exchange. I find it disturbing when people take this responsibility lightly. I propose the following guidelines for civil discourse on the war:
1. Think hard and critically about your own position.
2. Read opposing viewpoints and listen carefully to those with whom you disagree.
3. Cull your facts. Do not compromise truth for ideology.
4. Do not assign motives, feelings or positions to your opponents.
5. Take responsibility for your words. Do not speak or write anonymously.
The Iowa State University community should not sell itself short. We have a serious mission.
