The ISU women’s tennis team ended its losing streak by sweeping the University of Northern Iowa 7-0 on Thursday.

“It’s nice to get a win — we all deserve it,” freshman Elizabeth Chermel said. “Everybody fought hard and it’s a good confidence booster to get a win under our belts.”

Head coach Michele Conlon said the team did a good job focusing and were deserving of the win.

The Cyclones began the meet by winning both of their doubles matches.

Courtney Leese partnered with Evangelina Soriano to capture an 8-4 doubles victory. Senior Kristin Gyaki also won her doubles match with Sabrina Evers, 8-4.

“UNI is a good in-state rivalry,” Leese said. “Everyone played well. The weather was great and a lot of fans showed up. We were excited to be outside.”

Gyaki and Leese won both of their singles matches 6-1, 6-1. Evers was also victorious in singles, winning 6-3 and 6-4. Other ISU singles winners include Chermel, who won her matches 6-0 and 6-1, and Tara Goedjen who won 6-1 and 6-3.

With only five players present, the UNI women were forced to forfeit a singles and a doubles match.

“This meet gave us the opportunity to rest a couple of people,” Conlon said. “We took Soriano out of singles and Goedjen out of doubles so they could rest.

“We are going to take three days off to let everybody heal and then go back at it hard on Monday,” Conlon said.

The team travels to Columbia, Mo., to face Missouri for their next match on April 18, then will return home to play their final match of the season against Nebraska on April 19.

“We will really go hard at the next two teams and hopefully we will have success,” Conlon said.

The team doesn’t have any major changes planned in preparing to play Big 12 teams.

“We will be working hard in practice with an extra amount of focus to prepare for our next match,” Leese said.
