LETTER: GSB senate should fight tuition hikes
April 21, 2003
The following is online feedback to Carlyn R. Goebel’s April 21 letter “What do students want GSB to do?”
I urge the senate not to give up so quickly on issues, especially tuition. If you don’t want tuition raised, then get organized with the other Regents schools.
It has been done before. There used to be a group called United Students of Iowa. They hired a lobbyist who testified on behalf of the students before an education committee. The last time students had representation was 1997, which is strikingly close to when tuition started to rise. So what can the senate really do? Find the money, contact UNI and U of I and hire a lobbyist for student issues.
There is money available if one looks hard enough. David Boike (finance director) is an Iowa resident so his salary is less than was allocated, so that is about $6,000. The president and vice president get a full ride for their work. I’d like to see some commitment from them. If they really care about the students then take a cut. Get the program started, show your and ISU’s leadership.
