Twin brothers’ court dates delayed indefinitely
April 3, 2003
The sentencing of twin brothers accused of setting numerous fires and killing about 100 turkeys has been delayed to an unknown date, said Sgt. Randy Mortvedt of the Story County Sheriff’s Office.
Capt. Gary Foster of the Story County Sheriff’s Office identified Kyle Alan Sloan and Kevin Andrew Sloan of Ames, both 19, of being accused with setting arson fires at salvage yards and vehicle impound lots in Ames and McCallsburg in October 2002.
“Both Kyle and Kevin have pled guilty,” Mortvedt said.
“Neither have been sentenced yet, but they are very close.” Mortvedt said the delay in sentencing is due to Kevin’s missing plea in Hamilton County.
Also, the judge presiding over the case is waiting for the pre-sentence investigation to be completed before issuing his sentence.
When interviewed by the Ames Police Department and the Story County Sheriff’s Office, Foster said Kyle and Kevin admitted their involvement in a number of fires in Ames, McCallsburg and rural areas of Story, Boone and Hamilton Counties. The brothers also admitted killing about 100 turkeys at a farm near Story City.
Mortvedt said the two face charges of three Class C felonies and one aggravated misdemeanor in Story County, and one Class D felony in Boone and Hamilton counties.
Foster said the arrest of the two brothers came as a result of a collaborative effort from a number of different agencies.
Investigators from Ames Police, Ames Fire Department, Story County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Office worked together for more than a week to apprehend those responsible for the fires.
